I knew it. I knew that I would experiences soreness in muscles that I only knew existed because I studied them in Anatomy 101 in my university days. Even my eyeballs feel tired this morning! There is this total body exhaustion and I am moving somewhat slower than my normal gait. But was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! I want to say that it’s been twenty years since I slalom skied but I do believe that I showed off at a high school reunion about eight years ago. Nonetheless, it’s been a long time since I attempted to water ski but I got up the first time, immediately dropped a ski and there I was – slaloming and feeling every muscle come alive in pain. I crossed the wake a few times and finally let go of the ski rope, knowing that it was the only way I was going to survive. Add a few crazy tubing times and I was done for the day!
Why did I do that? Why did I subject my body to such torment? Well, The OVERFLOW group came to my house on Saturday and I suppose I wanted to show those younger women that I “still have it” at fifty four years old. They were impressed so I was successful in my plan – or was I? Two days later, my armpits feel like they will never be the same and my quadriceps are still burning. My husband reminded me of the time that I jumped on the a trampoline two days after I gave birth and well, yes…I suppose this water ski challenge was also a foolish physical prowess move to make.
However, that aside, Saturday was fantastic! Nine of us spent three and a half hours on the calm water in two motor boats. Many of the young girls had never tubed or water skied so it was wonderful to watch them attempt and succeed in these new, personal challenges. I have received a few emails from the ladies – younger and older, expressing their sore bodies, so I don’t feel so bad. Emails like:
Oh man .. my arms and shoulders hurt like CRAZY! Every slight bit of movement makes them hurt ): I got a little sunburn on my face too, but nothing too bad. For the most part, I’m pretty good (:
Yesterday was soo fun! I’m so glad I went 😉 SAM
My friend, Danielle wins “the most dramatic fall” when my husband accepted the challenge of trying to dumb her off the tube. He whipped her over the wake and the tube skimmed the water surface at such a high speed that she fell off and graciously performed four horizontal spins across the water. Perfect 10!!
It was an amazing afternoon. What a fun group of women!
One of the funniest moments happened when the girls decided to go out in the kayak and do some minnow fishing. I I wasn’t sure of their logic but hey, give it a try! This is what they caught – a two foot pike! The story goes that Emily whacked the fish with the kayak paddle and they netted their catch! Actually, the fish was dead already and somehow, it floated in near our dock. I’ve never seen that happen in two years of living here but the girls were thrilled! They were quite excited to show off their pike to our neighbours.
No one wanted the day to end. We had a big BBQ, a great talk together and of course, throw in a boatload of laughter. We all limped to our various cars and boats and headed home after seven hours of frolicking in the sun. Can older and younger women come together for life changing, fun and “real” times together?
Absolutely! That’s OVERFLOW!
