I’ve spent some time with a few women this past week whose pasts continue to plague them.
“I’ll never change. I feel hopeless.”
“I’m giving my best but nothing changes for me.”
“I feel stuck.”
“I feel like my past is going to haunt me for the rest of my life.”
“If __________ (a person or a circumstance) would only change, things would be so much better.”
The reality is that change happens within before change happens without. The deep, long lasting change needs to come from the inside out.
I recently saw this on FB and it has stayed with me for the past couple of days.
I’ve never considered the term, “authentic spirituality” defined this way.
There is a white flag waved in this definition – a resignation to the truth that, “your feelings tell you about you” and a surrender that deep change can’t happen merely from will power or strong desire. Change is not about manipulating others or our circumstances. Change does not happen when we allow our past to talk us out of moving forward. Who we were does not dictate who we are becoming. We are not doomed because of our past mistakes. We need not be victims of our dysfunctional upbringing.
There IS hope. We needn’t feel that there is no way out.
There IS freedom. We needn’t feel in bondage.
There IS forward moving. We needn’t feel stuck.
But our freedom and hope didn’t come lightly. Jesus loved us so much that He died on the cross for our sins.
Your sin and my sin.
When we surrender, the healing begins.
We meet Jesus alone and He Himself restores.
