DEVOTIONAL – THE HIDE AND SEEK, FIND AND FUNNY TIMES OF AN ALL GROWN UP WOMAN – FIND

YEARNING FOR SOLID GROUND

This isn’t me but I can tell you EXACTLY how I felt when I bungee jumped off a ski jump in Slovakia and was left hanging for a few minutes like this individual.

It was in the late fall of 1995. Our family and friends had travelled to an area in Slovakia to do some skiing and as we were going up the lift, I looked to my left and saw it  – a bungee jumping opportunity. Little Miss Adventure had to try it.  I climbed the ominous wooden staircase of the ski jump and when I got to the top, I was connected to a rope, given instructions to climb out of a window onto a small platform and swan dive out as far as I could.

There was no turning back. I took a big breath and dove head first with a rope around my feet.

To be honest, it wasn’t the diving that was so scary;  it was dangling at the end of a rope after the jump was completed that really freaked me out.  I felt such anxiety – I had never wanted my feet to be on solid ground more than this moment. It might seem to be a rather unusual place to reflect on scripture but this experience brought new meaning to a bible verse that came to mind as I hung vertically over the water.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40.2 NIV

I have been in this place emotionally as well, when life was so unmanageable and there seemed to be no place where my steps were secure. I yearned to be lifted up and set on solid ground that would bear the weight of my sin and my circumstances. I have dangled and hung, being incapable of saving myself.

I will never forget the moment when my feet were on the ground, the ropes were taken off and I was free.

Every time you draw your breath, you suck in mercy. Thomas Watson
