DEVOTIONAL – THE HIDE AND SEEK, FIND AND FUNNY TIMES OF AN ALL GROWN UP WOMAN – SEEK

Sweet Moments With Jesus

Early this week, I was reminded to think about some ways in which I “set the Lord always before (me)” (Psalm 16.8)

I’m deeply humbled by this verse.  The question for me isn’t so much “How do I set the Lord always before me?” but “Is this actually a reality in my life? DO I honestly do this?”

The apostle Peter translates this passage, “I foresaw the Lord always before my face” (Acts 2.25) There is confidence, decisiveness and intention in both these statements, isn’t there? David writes this miktam to extol God’s personal involvement.  The apostle Peter, addresses the crowd and recaps David’s security in Christ. Both of these men speak boldly, with great assurance, that nothing can disturb them or remove them from the Lord’s presence. Their convictions waft through their words.

I’ve been “setting the gym before me” five times/week for years, without exception. It takes me less than an hour to scrape myself off the bed in the early hours of the morning, gobble down a warm bowl of porridge and get my body running on a treadmill or on a pedalling on a bike in a smelly gym – and I commit 1.5 hours/day to this routine. It takes time. It takes decisiveness. It takes discipline.

I want to be physically fit but my heart longs for fullness of life. My heart longs for purpose and meaning, peace and love – that doesn’t come from a smelly gym – that comes from setting the Lord always before me. So, is this true in my life?

Over six years ago, I decided to start a blog and if you look in the “About”section of the daily post, you will read this:

We encounter God in the ordinariness of life, not in the search for spiritual highs and extraordinary mystical experiences, but in our simple presence in life.  Brennan Manning

That’s why I blog. That’s what I look for.

I do wake up in the morning with the desire and discipline to look for God every day. I purposely put myself into the Word of God to experience sweet, healing, loving moments. But do I sit at the feet of Jesus quietly?

No…I have to admit that I run around a lot, “doing.”

Every day of my life is nothing but a collection of moments and I wonder,“How many of those moments do I live in the awareness of His presence?

I think I’ll just stop and think more about that for a while.

MAKE A MOMENT TO MUSE

  1. What does it mean for you to “set the Lord always before you?”
  2. Do you see God’s hand in the ordinariness of life?
  3. What does it practically look like to “live in the awareness of His presence?

speak truth: Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.       Psalm 73.23
