Drew’s coming home for Christmas! In fact, he’s probably half way across the Atlantic Ocean by now. We’ve changed the bed sheets, made some room for all his clothes ( who said that men pack lightly?), bought some steaks and set the late night dinner table for three. The house is decorated but we haven’t got a tree yet because Chris insists on a live one. However, we’ve brought all the decorations up from the boat house and this weekend, Drew will be assisting with the family tree decorating tradition. Yup! It’s Christmas and Drew is coming home! I know it will warm his little pea-picking heart when he drives down our road and sees home all lit up and waiting for him.
Drew left for Law School in London, England in September so it’s been about four months since we’ve seen him. Even when he was doing his undergraduate studies in London, Ontario, we only saw him about three times between September and December but somehow, it was different. He always made it home for my birthday in the Fall and of course, he was more than happy to help us eat the big turkey dinner at Thanksgiving. It’s not like he came home every weekend but we knew he was “near by.” This year, he’s as close as a text message or a Skype conversation but he’s still far away.
I’m really looking forward to seeing him come around the corner of that big exit hall in Terminal 2 tonight. I already told him I’m expecting a humongous hug! I hope he’s bracing himself for a truckload of questions over dinner tonight. There’s a lot of news to catch up on and it will be good practice for when he attends those extended family get togethers during the holidays – EVERYONE is going to want to hear all about his adventures in England.
I think he’s happy that he’ll be coming home to snow but what he really wants is for this lake to freeze over so he can go skating! That’s going to take some time, I’m afraid – today, there are plenty of white-capped waves slapping the shore! It’s cold but there’s no sign of ice….yet!
I’m very thankful that Christmas is bringing Drew home.
