My Father’s World

Some people think it’s quite interesting that Chris and I have ice fishing huts spotting the lake in our “backyard” but I think it’s amazing to have harness-racing horses circling the training track in my friend’s neighbourhood.

Our Saturday morning walk was such a delight. I was mesmerized by the beauty of our surroundings.

Fresh snow. Crisp air. Incredible scenery.

Watching those horses galloping around the track was breathtaking.

As I took it all in, I couldn’t help but think about and be thankful for this amazing world that God has created. Despite the constant barrage of negative press about our environment, I see great beauty all around me. I am often reminded of a hymn that I learned when I was a little girl.

“This is My Father’s World” was written by Maltbie Davenport and according to hymnologist, Kenneth Osbeck, Davenport had a practice of  “taking morning walks to the top of a hill north of town where he had a full view of Lake Ontario and the surrounding country. It was said that he had a frequent expression before leaving for these walks, “I’m going out to see my Father’s world.”

I really like that perspective. This is in indeed His world…and everything in it.

This is my father’s world
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres

This is my father’s world
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas
His hand the wonders wrought

This is my father’s world
The birds their carols raise
The morning light, the lily white
Declare their maker’s praise

This is my father’s world
He shines in all that’s fair
In the rustling grass, I hear him pass
He speaks to me everywhere

This is my father’s world
Oh, let me never forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong
God is the ruler yet

This is my father’s world
Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is king, let the heavens ring
God reigns, let the earth be glad

The Lord is king, let the heavens ring
God reigns, let the earth be glad

for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.                                                    1 Corinthians 10.26 NIV
