I recently read That Makes Two Of Us by Connie Witt and Cathi Workman.
When I was leafing through the introduction, I immediately connected with these words.
My husband calls it “the gift of hang” – seeing the opportunity to spend time with younger women and intentionally watching for the times I can inject a “God moment” or “life lesson” into the mix.”
I have that gift. There a lot of gifts that I don’t have but I definitely have “the gift of hang” – I’ve been doing it most of my life.
I started OVERFLOW! two years ago because I passionately believe that older and younger women need a new way to connect. We started with six women and now, we are a group of sixteen, ages 15 – 62 years of age. We meet every six weeks and… well..I’ll let Sam and Karen tell you about the experience.
There is nothing like OVERFLOW! I mean, I never thought that meeting with older women would be exciting but this group has changed my life. We have a blast together and I learn more about life every time I’m with this crazy group of women, whether we’re tubing and waterskiing at Diane’s place, talking about relationships, helping out at the downtown youth center, interviewing influential women, “elfing” the neighbours at Christmas, working with unwed moms, doing High Tea, praying together, going on a road trip to spend time with Senator Anne Cools or attempting to make sushi. I’m so thankful that I can be part of this incredible group of women. Sam – 17 years old
I love watching and listening to the younger women in OVERFLOW! I’m inspired by their energy and encouraged by their stories. I have learned that I can encourage them and I’m thankful for the opportunities to help them work through their decisions. I love the fact that we laugh and play together but we also have marvelous discussions that really help us grow in wisdom to deal with life. Women of all ages need to pull out of the busyness of their lives and head towards this kind of healthy, life-giving community. In OVERFLOW!, our spirits are lifted and we help each other press on. I’ve wanted to be part of something like this all my life. Karen – 62 years old.
It’s been an amazing journey for us. We’re a crazy group and we’re having a great time together. Here are ten of us –
…and today we met! Today’s big lesson? Nobody likes a cocky tuber! Chris can whip you off that tube so fast, you won’t know what hit you! Right, Danielle??
In her book, Connie Witt mentions Mark 2.22:
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins.
There are times that we need new wineskins. Whether it be in the education system, the work environment or the church, we need to be aware of and sensitive to new wine and appropriately respond. I believe that OVERFLOW! is a new wineskin and the younger generation is the new wine. Women of all ages need to slow down and make time to understand, encourage and love each other…and don’t forget the fun! It has to be fun!
OVERFLOW! works. Welcome, Monika….and we missed you – Anneke, Florence, Gloria, Elizabeth, Megan, Hana, Ann Marie, Linda and Suzanne and Coco! It will be great to see everybody in October!
What a fantastic day!
