I heard some devastating family news this week and it’s been difficult to process it all. Four days into it, as I reflect on where I am emotionally, mentally and spiritually, I recognize a pattern in where I have gone as I have mourned great loss, both this week and in times past.
I share it because perhaps it will be helpful for you, when you are dealing with difficult news in your life.
THIS IS MY UNDERSTANDING.
They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD. Psalm 112.7
THIS IS MY CHOICE.
The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18.10
THIS IS MY HELP.
a) GOD REACHES OUT TO ME.
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. Psalm 18.16
b) I REACH OUT TO GOD.
Still, if you set your heart on God
and reach out to him,
If you scrub your hands of sin
and refuse to entertain evil in your home,
You’ll be able to face the world unashamed
and keep a firm grip on life, guiltless and fearless.
You’ll forget your troubles;
they’ll be like old, faded photographs.
Your world will be washed in sunshine,
every shadow dispersed by dayspring.
Full of hope, you’ll relax, confident again;
you’ll look around, sit back, and take it easy.
Expansive, without a care in the world,
you’ll be hunted out by many for your blessing.
But the wicked will see none of this.
They’re headed down a dead-end road
with nothing to look forward to—nothing. Job 11.13-20
c) I REACH OUT TO MY FAMILY.
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6.2
To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is! Proverbs 15.23
THIS IS MY HOPE.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 1 Peter 5.10
