Self Assessment

Day 7 bus driver training – complete. I am slowly feeling more confident and the procedures don’t seem so daunting anymore. I know excellent teaching when I see and/or experience it and I have to say that my trainer couldn’t be better.  He knows his stuff, he’s incredibly patient, encourages excellence and best of all, he puts up with all my questions, my humor, my little boo-boos and my big blunders. Believe it or not, I haven’t run into a tree or backed up on anyone’s lawn yet! My favourite time in the bus is when I am chugging along on a quiet, rural road.  I’m sittin’ high, looking around, practising pick ups and drop offs…it’s fun!  Learning to drive a school bus is different than anything that I have ever done in my life and this training has been wonderful.

At the end of today’s class, Kevin asked me to complete a self assessment as part of my homework. It was a simple form with various bus driving skills listed on one side and two options given on the other side : do it consistently and need more practice.  I like that. There is no starched rating system. I’m not being “boxed in” or judged harshly. I’m given the opportunity to think about each skill and decide whether I demonstrate a healthy pattern of doing the skill properly or whether my ability to complete the skill needs more refining.

That got me thinking…maybe that’s how we need to think about verses in the Bible that ask us to come to God and ask Him to, “test me..and try me, examine my heart and my mind.”  (Psalm 26.2)  I don’t think that God calls us to perfection because only He is perfect. However, I do believe that He calls us to a standard of excellence.  He wants us to have teachable spirits and a sober estimate of ourselves. We do this by asking Him to help us take a good and realistic look at who we are. That’s one of the ways we grow – by facing reality and making choices about the next step.  Are we moving in the right direction?  Are we becoming more consistent in loving, serving, listening, forgiving and pursuing holiness or do we need more practice?   These two choices communicate and hold out hope.

There are definitely bus skills AND character qualities that I need to practice more. I desire consistency in both.

Just a thought.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.  Psalm 139 23
