I have the “gift of hang.” I’ve been doing it most of my life.
I create opportunities to spend time with women of all ages. I love to learn from and encourage others in their day-to-day life and in their difficult times.
After a smashing weekend with an awesome group of women who were excited to read my book, Sisters in the Son, I spent some time today reflecting on the six years of our OVERFLOW! group, the topic of my book. I passionately believed that older and younger women needed a new way to connect — something more organic than what I was seeing in women’s ministries. So, I created OVERFLOW! — women doing life together, based on Philippians 1.9 — I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. (NLT)
Hanging out with this outstanding group of women was one of the best experiences of my life. I think they liked it too! 🙂
There is nothing like OVERFLOW! I mean, I never thought that meeting with older women would be exciting but this group has changed my life. We have a blast together and I learn more about life every time I’m with this crazy group of women, whether we’re tubing and waterskiing at Diane’s place, talking about relationships, helping out at the downtown youth center, interviewing influential women, “elfing” the neighbours at Christmas, working with unwed moms, doing High Tea, praying together, going on a road trip to spend time with Senator Anne Cools or attempting to make sushi. I’m so thankful that I can be part of this incredible group of women. Sam – 17 years old
I love watching and listening to the younger women in OVERFLOW! I’m inspired by their energy and encouraged by their stories. I have learned that I can encourage them and I’m thankful for the opportunities to help them work through their decisions. I love the fact that we laugh and play together but we also have marvelous discussions that really help us grow in wisdom to deal with life. Women of all ages need to pull out of the busyness of their lives and head towards this kind of healthy, life-giving community. In OVERFLOW!, our spirits are lifted and we help each other press on. I’ve wanted to be part of something like this all my life. Karen – 62 years old.
I miss the group. I miss the precious conversations and the laughing and the vulnerability and the fun.The youngest women in the initial group are now in their first year of university so the group has disbanded but we’re still in touch with and pray for each other.
Connie Witt, in her book, That Makes Two of Us, mentions Mark 2.22.
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins.
There are times that we need new wineskins. Whether it be in the education system, the work environment or the church, we need to be aware of and sensitive to new wine and appropriately respond. I believe that OVERFLOW! is a new wineskin and the younger generation is the new wine. Women of all ages need to slow down and make time to understand, encourage and love each other…and don’t forget the fun! It has to be fun!
Yup. I’ve definitely got the “gift of hang.”
