Telling Yourself The Truth

You is swe-e-e-e-et…you is ki-i-i-i-i-nd…you is imPORtant.”

Those powerful words having been ringing in my ears since I saw the movie, “The Help” a couple of weeks ago. I loved the story so much that I went to see the movie twice – once with my friend and once with my family. Everything was captivating – the music, the acting and facial expressions, the outfits and the plot but the most memorable moments for me were when Aibileen, a maid and nanny in Jackson, Mississippi swept precious two year old Mae Mobley in her arms, looked straight into her piercing eyes and told her to repeat these nine simple words.

“You is swe-e-e-e-et…you is ki-i-i-i-i-nd…you is imPORtant.”

It’s called “Self talk.” What do you say to yourself, about yourself?  You know those fleeting thoughts that race through your mind and settle in your spirit before you even know they’re present? Well, they impact you big time. It’s just one unhealthy thought piled onto the next and before you know it, you’ve got yourself a full grown belief – and then you act on that belief.

Aibileen continues, “ugly grows up inside you. Everyday you’re not dead in the ground, you gotta constantly make decisions.  Am I going to believe all those bad things fools say about me today?”

Wise words. Making strong, healthy and loving choices through painful times has made Aibileen a wise woman. She is definitely “The Help”…in more ways than one.

The movie left the audience feeling good but it personally challenged me to be “on the lookout” for the lies that I tell myself about myself. There are little thought-threads that weave themselves into the dark places of my mind – “You”ll never write a book,” “You aren’t good enough,” You’re a failure.”

They’re not from God.

I desire to speak truth to myself and His Word is Truth – so I press on.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.  Romans 12.2

I love this quote from Lady Bird Johnson: “Become so wrapped up in something that you forget to be afraid.”
Just don’t even give those negative thoughts any attention. Walk fearlessly!
