There is something about driving over roadkill that just makes me cringe.
I’m sure that I’m not the only one who feels this way but this situation becomes a real problem for me because instinctively, I do whatever necessary to dodge the animal’s body. It’s like a reflex – without thinking, I turn that steering wheel very abruptly. My husband has told me so many times to hold onto the wheel tightly and simply drive over the animal because ultimately, it’s the safest thing to do. If I see the roadkill up ahead and I have time to process what is about to happen, I will steady my hands and discipline my mind to drive straight over the body…
…but this morning was different.
I was driving on a two-way highway and the distance between the car ahead of me and my car didn’t allow any time to process what was about to happen. This huge, dead raccoon on the road came out of nowhere and I swerved to the left – directly into the oncoming traffic. Thankfully, in those three seconds of uncontrolled driving, there were no cars coming but as soon as I returned to my lane, two cars passed me.
I try to begin each day with “Lord, I commit this day to You” and I truly believe that my life is in His hands.
I have often wondered how many times God has intervened and protected my life. I can think of some “close calls” but I am sure that there have been many times when God has protected me and I haven’t even been aware of it.
I rest in His protection. It’s a crazy world out there and it reassures me to know that God knows the number of hairs on my head and the number of days to my life…and nothing will change what He ordains.
His plans can not be thwarted. There are no “what ifs…”
Let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. Psalm 5.11
