(sermon by Konnie Vissers)
Family matters. Church family matters.
Jesus redefines family. Near the time of his crucifixion, Jesus sees his mother with the disciple whom He loved and he says to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. (John 19.26,27)
The church is the renewed family in God. The early church family looked so different from the world because of the way they cared for and loved each other. In this passage, there seems to be very specific rules to follow but Paul was talking specifically to Timothy’s church, which had very limited funding – they couldn’t respond to everyone. Paul was prioritizing the widows, who were the most destitute individuals in the church because they couldn’t make their own money.
They took care of their family first.
Today, the church looks very different than the early church.
What can you do to promote world peace. Go home and love your family. Mother Teresa
What if we used our best behaviours with the ones we love the most?
What if we saved our best energies for our families?
What if our neighbours looked at us and asked, “What are they all about?”
What if we took sabbath as a family?
What if the church rose up to be family for the orphans and widows?
What change can you make that would dramatically change your family?
