Toll Booth Trouble

Here’s another humourous adventure I got caught in this past week when I drove to Ohio!

So, I made it across the border and really needed to get out and stretch my legs. Somehow, I ended up at a toll booth. I had some American bills but no change so I fell in behind some cars that were going through the cash line…

…At least I thought I did.

When I got to the booth, there was a lady who was facing the other way and the window was closed.  I sat there patiently, waiting for the woman to open the window and change a $10 bill.  I waited and waited….and then, I tried to get her attention. But nothing moved this woman. She was facing the other way and she wasn’t having anything to do with me.

Meanwhile, the guy behind me started impatiently honking his horn at me and I quickly got flustered. I drove right through the toll and figured I could pay at the next toll booth.

Nope. That’s not how it goes.

I drove forward, moved to the right and my intention was to get off at the first exit…but I didn’t make it that far.

Out of nowhere, a police car came flying towards me, flashing his lights and sounding his siren.

“He’s after ME?”

I pulled over and the police car pulled up beside me.

Police: You just went through the toll without paying, ma’am.”

Diane: I tried to pay but the woman was looking the other way and the man behind me was impatiently honking his horn at me so I drove through. I was going to pay at the next booth, Sir.

Police: That’s not how it works.  You drove through the Ezy-Pass line. They don’t take your money.

Diane: I’m so sorry. I had no idea.

Police: I see you’re from Canada. Don’t you have toll booths there?

Diane: Not that I know of.

Police: Well, just pay double and we’ll call it even. But don’t do it again. Pay attention when you’re driving.

I was so embarrassed, I didn’t know what to say. I got out of the car, walk over to the police station and paid $10.00. I have no idea what it actually cost but I just wanted to get out of there so I handed the man the money and walked out ….really quickly.

I definitely won’t make that mistake again!

Live and learn!
