I am convinced without a doubt, that my brother and his wife make the best roasted turkey dinner in North America. Over the years, they have perfected the art of cooking big pieces of meat and their turkey with homemade stuffing and sausage meat “is to die for”. Despite the warning to “make sure you leave room for the Christmas cookies”, the twenty two of us managed to gobble up (pun intended) two very big turkeys without a second thought. There were scrumptious vegetables and melt-in-your-mouth mashed potatoes as well but the turkeys took center stage. Two days later, I’m still thinking about it.
Roasting a turkey to perfection is a labor of love for Brad and Lynn – I think that’s why it tastes so good.
They cook and laugh together and they know each other’s every move in the kitchen. It’s like watching them execute a perfectly choreographed dance duet – each partner completely focused on his/her own performance and responsibilities, yet completely in sync with the other. Together they wash, stuff, spice, watch, baste, cover, time, encourage and patiently wait for the right moment. They peak in their performance at exactly the right time and they are acutely aware that the only way they can capture the judge’s favor is to “give it their all” – don’t hold back. Experience has taught them that. They clear the kitchen and gingerly remove the turkey from the oven. They have thought through their presentation strategy long before and they need lots of elbow room to reveal this masterpiece. They enter the dining room, beaming with confidence, anticipating the gasps of delight and appreciation from the family. They are masters in this arena – no one can compete. They never disappoint.
There are few things more enjoyable than to watch people doing what they love to do. Thank you, Brad and Lynn for a “perfect ten” in your display of love to us all.
