We had just started passing the food around for our Thanksgiving dinner, when I asked everyone, “Tell us one thing you’re thankful for.” The first answer was shouted out by a young voice – “Food!” – and then others chimed in with various responses.
When it was my nine-year -old grandson’s turn to speak, he stood up and said, “Christianity.”
I think he caught everybody off guard for a moment but I knew right then and there, that Phoenie and I would talk about his answer at a later time.
The two of us like talking about Jesus.
Usually, when Phoenie comes to our house, he’s my guest blogger but this past Sunday, he was much too busy playing outside and mattress surfing down the stairs to write . . .
. . . .so I called him at 7:00 am. this morning and interviewed him over the phone.
Do you remember what answer you gave when I asked everyone to talk about what they’re thankful for?
Yup. I said, “Christianity.”
What made you say that?
Because I’m really thankful for God. Everyday I think about God.
What amazes you about God, Phoenie?
I like that He just created everything. You know I want to be a scientist when I grow up, right?
I know you love Science and I think this world could definitely use some strong, smart scientists who are Christians, Phoenie.
Yah, I agree. I became a Christian when I lived in Sudbury and I think God has made a big difference in my life.
Oh yah? How?
Well, I’m kinda’ short right now and I get picked on sometimes. I think being a Christian has helped me be a better person. I’m kind to others, even when they hurt me. I’m trying to love people even when I don’t feel like it.
That’s awesome, Phoenie.
I gotta’ go now because I’m still lying in bed and I have to go to school soon.
OK, Phoenie. Thanks for talking to me this morning. I love you.
I love you too, Nana. Bye!
I hung up the phone, knelt by my bed and thanked God for Phoenie. Every since he was born, I have told him that he is a gift from God and he continues to teach me so much.
For the past few days, I’ve been asking myself, “Am I thankful for Christianity?
It’s an interesting question, isn’t it?
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Psalm 107.1 NIV
