In honor of International Women’s Day, the Star newspaper ran a piece last week entitled, “Behind every great woman—there’s another woman.”
This headline caught my eye because, although I had not thought of it in those exact words, I have always believed that God did not intend for any of us to go through life alone. There are people who have walked before us – “mothers, mentors, teachers and idols, the ones who have paved our paths.” As Bette Midler reminded us, these are the people who have been “the wind beneath our wings.”
In this newspaper article, the Star asked eight high-achieving Canadian females this question: “Is there a woman in your life you’d like to thank, someone who helped you along the way?”
Eight woman. Eight different responses. The answers were as diverse as the women themselves—a track coach, a grandmother, a voice coach, an influential writer, a scientist, a documentarian and moms were mentioned twice.
We all need a little help . . .
. . . and it’s important to thank those who have gone before us and loved us well.
American poet, Adrienne Rich once said, “The most notable fact our culture imprints on women is the sense of our limits. The most important thing that one woman can do for another is to illuminate and expand her sense of possibilities.
There is a woman behind every woman.
How wonderful, when God brings someone into our lives who supports, uplifts and carries us.
Sometimes we need God with skin on.
Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with geuine affection and take delight in honoring each other. Romans 12. 9,10 NLT
